Ten institutes of technology and polytechnics announced
The government has announced the ten institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITP) that will be established on 1 January 2026.
The government has announced the ten institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITP) that will be established on 1 January 2026.
They are:
- Ara Institute of Canterbury
- Unitec/Manukau Institute of Technology (standing up as a single entity)
- Eastern Institute of Technology
- Toi Ohomai
- Wintec
- Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
- Southern Institute of Technology
- Otago Polytechnic (stand-alone within the federation)
- Universal College of Learning (stand-alone within the federation)
- The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand (anchor polytechnic of the federation)
Four ITPs – NorthTec, Western Institute of Technology Taranaki, Whitireia/WelTec, and Tai Poutini Polytechnic – will remain as part of Te Pūkenga, and decisions on their future viability are expected to be made in the first half of 2026.
These Cabinet decisions are in principle until the passing of the Education and Training (Vocational Education and Training System) Amendment Bill and Cabinet’s final approval of the regulations for each ITP.
