The National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence (the Centre) contributes to excellent educational outcomes for learners by working with  to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning.

It supports the growth of capable and skilled learners by encouraging and enabling the sustainable improvement of tertiary teaching and learning.

As set out in the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence funding mechanism, its functions include:

  • building the teaching capability of TEOs and educators
  • commissioning and, where appropriate, researching, monitoring, and evaluating effective teaching and learning in tertiary education, and
  • providing advice to the tertiary education sector and government agencies.

It’s our role to select an organisation (that meets the criteria outlined in the funding mechanism) to host the Centre.

Ako Aotearoa

Massey University is currently funded to host the Centre, known as Ako Aotearoa.

Ako Aotearoa is based in Wellington with hubs in Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch.

Ako Aotearoa builds collaborative relationships with TEOs and tertiary teachers to encourage effective teaching and learning practices.

Ako Aotearoa also hosts the Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards. The awards aim to:

  • recognise and encourage excellence in tertiary teaching, and
  • provide an opportunity for teachers to develop their careers and share their good practice with others.
