Education performance indicators published
Every year we publish educational performance indicators (EPIs) for each tertiary education organisation (TEO) we fund. EPIs are one set of measures used to assess the performance of TEOs and to make future investment decisions. We have published EPI data since 2010.
Every year we publish educational performance indicators (EPIs) for each tertiary education organisation (TEO) we fund. EPIs are one set of measures used to assess the performance of TEOs and to make future investment decisions. We have published EPI data since 2010.
For all TEOs, apart from industry training organisations (ITOs), EPIs from 2015 onwards are available through an interactive web-based application.
For industry training organisations (ITOs), EPI reports using our current methodology are available from 2016 onwards.
We are no longer updating sector rates using the previous methodology, which we retired in 2015 and 2016. However, the reports remain available on our website.

Overall sector performance
As in previous years there is consistent year-to-year performance by TEOs across the sector. Universities continue to perform well overall. There is more variability in performance across other sectors.
- The majority of Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics show increased first-year retention rates.
- The wānanga sector has the highest qualification completion rates.
- The Private Training Establishment sector shows increased course completion rates.
- The ITO sector shows strong first-year retention for apprentices, despite some backward shifts at certain ITOs.
