This course focuses on improving listening, speaking, reading and writing through an emphasis on practical everyday topics and tasks needed for life in NZ.
Sample topics:
- Kiwi slang/kiwiana,
- Greetings/common expressions/idioms,
- Current affairs and news articles,
- Role plays involving making appointments and phone calls,
- Topics relating to local events, festivals and seasons,
- Grammatical skills, predominantly focussing on tenses.

Course

Know Your Place - Central Otago

A 6-week course to orientate newcomers to Central Otago and Aotearoa, including:
- Kiwi slang/Kiwiana
- Know how to volunteer – Volunteer South
- Know your Council – CODC
- Know how to respond in an emergency ORC
- Know about Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- Know your tangata whenua, local stories and place names
- 6-week course - each lesson 2 hours long
- The ESOL Tutor will invite a different speaker to present at each module who is well versed in the subject matter for each module. The tutor will support these modules with vocabulary lists and information that is sent home.

One to One Lessons - Elementary

Individual lessons for beginner English speakers. These lessons are tailor-made for English language learners who lack confidence in group settings and require lessons that focus on their specific needs, predominantly foundational skills such as:

- Vocabulary extension relating to everyday topics.

Public Speaking for Migrants

The ten-week course focuses on real-life workplace communication. Each week builds practical skills for speaking clearly and confidently, giving and receiving feedback, participating in meetings, and connecting across cultures. It is a collaboration with Speech NZ and participants will sit a Speech NZ examination at the end of the course.
