English for Speakers of Other Languages

To facilitate and support students to understand and communicate in English in interactive situations in everyday contexts to the highest level of their personal competencies. To provide the knowledge, practice, and individual feedback, in a safe and creative environment, to assist students to develop their English language skills to achieve personal goals.
CONTENT: Level-appropriate syllabi and coursebooks aligned with the AEA curriculum and corresponding CEFR descriptors. The core language skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking (including pronunciation) are presented in an integrated form with view to developing knowledge and use of language within explicit contexts, i.e. authentic application of language competencies. As such, content focuses on the study of syntactic and lexical structures and their production through writing tasks, for example portfolio work, letter and email writing, personal reflective narratives, creative writing and essays; and through speaking tasks including dialogues, discussions, presentations, role-plays and interviews.
Target language structures are also developed through receptive skills, including reading comprehension, skimming and scanning, summarising and predicting content. Similarly, listening skills are developed through real-world listen activities, videos, TED-talks, interview and response, as well as active listening skills such as notetaking and prediction.
Course texts are supplemented by course tutors to include local content and context, with reference to tangata whenua, Te Reo Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and integrating the principle of ako into the multicultural language classroom through the exploration of diversity, cultural differences and perspectives and the collaborative co-construction of knowledge led by student voices.
