The content of the course includes two language macro skills, being: listening and speaking. The English language level is simple and situated in a New Zealand social, community, or workplace context.
- Speaking in simple and conversational situations is developed through practice exercises in a New Zealand context.
- Listening to speech that contains words and simple phrases in a New Zealand context.
- Listening skills are developed through practice and exercises of clearly pronounced speech and conversations on topics that are familiar in a New Zealand context.
- Listen to and pronounce very simple te reo Māori words in the context of living in New Zealand.
- Understanding and responding to simple and very simple and familiar New Zealand phrases.

Course content includes:
- Reading short and simple familiar texts that express familiar New Zealand experiences or situations.
- Writing short writing passages that express very familiar New Zealand experiences or situations.
- Speaking in short and familiar conversational situations that last for at least six exchanges. You’ll build a simple and familiar word vocabulary and phrases in a New Zealand context.
- Listening to simple and familiar words and short and simple phrases in a New Zealand context that are at least 30 seconds long.
- Reading, writing and pronouncing very simple te reo Māori words in the context of living in New Zealand.
- Understanding and responding to simple and very familiar New Zealand phrases.

Course content includes:
- Reading familiar texts of at least 350 words long that express familiar New Zealand experiences or situations.
- Writing short passages of at least 150 words long that express very familiar New Zealand experiences or situations with an emerging level of control of simple cohesive devices and formulaic expressions.
- Speaking in familiar conversational situations that last for at least two minutes.
- Listening to a speech of at least 90 seconds that contains familiar words and simple phrases in a New Zealand context.
- Reading, writing, listening to and pronouncing very simple te reo Māori phrases in the context of living in New Zealand. Pronunciation of simple and routine te reo Māori phrases is clear and easily recognisable.
- Understanding and responding to simple and very familiar New Zealand idioms.
