STEM is an acronym referring to the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Strategically Important Provision (SIP)
The purpose of the Transitional Support for Strategically Important Provision (SIP) Fund is to provide support for institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) to maintain provision that is strategically important during the transition from the Institute of Skills and Technology into a network of regional polytechnics (2026 to 2027).

Student Achievement Component (SAC)
The Student Achievement Component (SAC) was the government funding contribution or subsidy and was replaced by DQ (Delivery on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework [NZQCF]) funding.

Student Management System (SMS)
A database or application which can store information relating to a tertiary education organisation (TEO).

Student progression
Measured by the completion progression rate. This is a rate of re-enrolment in a higher-level qualification in the following year for students who have completed a qualification.

Student retention
Measured by the student completion (or continuation) rate. This is the number of re-enrolments or qualification completions at a TEO each year compared with the number of students present at the TEO in the previous year.

Student services fees
Tertiary education organisations (TEOs) can charge domestic students a fee to help fund the costs of delivering student services such as health care and recreational activities.

StudyLink
A division of the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) which administers Student Allowances, Student Loans and Jobseeker Support Student Hardship for people undertaking study.

Supplementary Credit Programme (SCP)
Supplementary Credit Programme (SCP) is a programme that allows learners who have already completed a qualification to undertake additional unit standards to upgrade or widen their existing qualifications without being required to enrol in a full programme.
