Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to the latest edition of RoVE News. What a year it has been for vocational education and training.

When I sat down to write the introduction to 2021’s ‘end of year’ edition of RoVE News, I reflected about the establishment of the six Workforce Development Councils (WDCs), 15 permanent Regional Skills Leadership Groups (RSLGs) and Te Pūkenga.

So much has happened since. The WDCs are building the all-important rapport with industry, the RSLGs have each produced valuable regional workforce development reports and Te Pūkenga and a number of PTEs have become the new home for learners engaged in vocational education and training. All the work is not done yet, but we now have the structure in place to realise all the key benefits we expect from this work – better, more flexible learner access, qualifications and programmes that reflect the needs of industry, and a strong, unified, sustainable vocational education system fit for the future.

I would like to thank all of you in the sector who have brought such dedication and commitment to the considerable joint effort that has been the Reform of Vocational Education in New Zealand. I am looking forward to the ongoing work to ensure the successful bedding-in of the new system structure and look forward, like no doubt all of you, to watching vocational education and training in New Zealand grow and mature and be everything it can be.

Ngā mihi,

Tim Fowler
