Te Pūkenga has made significant strides over the past year and Budget 2022 is further supporting its work with a $40 million investment. This initiative will fund capital injections into Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology to co-fund prioritised remediation and upgrades of infrastructure across its network.

The investments will support Te Pūkenga to modernise its physical infrastructure as part of implementing RoVE. This will support learners to access fit-for-purpose teaching facilities that enables more flexible and work-based learning.

Te Pūkenga operational initiatives over the past twelve months have included:

• Establishment of Te Pūkenga Work Based Learning ahead of the transitions of BCITO, Competenz, Connexis and MITO.
• Publication of three Te Rito reports into the barriers faced by ākonga Māori, Pacific and Disabled highlighting the voices of these learners.
• Development and publication of Te Rito Outcomes Framework for learner success.
• Development and adoption of a disability Action Plan to better meet the needs of our disabled learners.
• Engagement with more than 3,000 people in the community on its proposed functions and operating model.
• Implementation of Te Pae Tawhiti (Te Tiriti Excellence Framework) action plans and regular reporting across the network.
• Increasing the number and influence of Māori leadership functions across the network.
• Completion of two Aromātai Kaimahi surveys to check in with kaimahi in its network on how they think the transition is going.
• Development of an integrated, collective approach to international education.
• Establishment of Interim Learner and Kaimahi Advisory Committees and Komiti Māori (Interim Māori Advisory Committee).
• Commencement of work to unify 205 programmes into 49 programmes, and identification of 360 qualifications for which there is only one programme.
• Signing of partnerships and agreements with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Department of Corrections, New Zealand Defence Force, Energy Aotearoa, Energy Academy.
• Development of a Seismic Strategy and Policy to manage collective risk through short-, medium- and long-term priorities.
• Inclusion of Toi Ohomai and Wintec into its structure from 31 May 2022.
