Ka Hikitia is the Māori Education Strategy, and Tau Mai Te Reo is the Māori Language in Education Strategy. Together, they outline the shifts needed in education for Māori to enjoy and achieve educational success as Māori, and growth in te reo Māori for both Māori and non-Māori learners.

Every person should receive the support they need to succeed in education, and achieve sustainable employment and lead fulfilling lives. However, our current tertiary education system does not always deliver an education experience suitable to the needs of a large group of learners. Māori, Pacific and disabled learners are over-represented in this group.

Strategies drive equity for Māori learners

Ka Hikitia and Tau Mai Te Reo set out the strategic direction for Māori education and Māori language in education respectively. They describe the actions we will need to take in the tertiary sector to raise Māori educational success.

These strategies underpin Aotearoa New Zealand’s 30-year education vision and objectives and are supported by the Government’s education work programme and our learner success approach.

The new refreshed strategies provide a framework for all parts of the education system to work together to achieve equitable outcomes for Māori learners and their whānau.

We continue to focus on delivering tertiary success for all learners and a system that delivers better results for New Zealand. We can’t achieve this without you, the sector, so use these summaries of Ka Hikitia and Tau Mai Te Reo key actions to explore how we each can contribute to making this happen.
