Retention rates
‘Retention’ is one of the indicators we use to measure the performance of tertiary education organisations (TEOs) . This page includes performance data by year and provider type using the 'retention' indicator.
‘Retention’ is one of the indicators we use to measure the performance of tertiary education organisations (TEOs) . This page includes performance data by year and provider type using the 'retention' indicator.
What the indicator shows
The ‘retention’ indicator shows the proportion of students in a given year that complete a qualification or re-enrol with the same TEO in the following year.
Although students leave part-way through study for all kinds of reasons, this data gives an indication of how well students are engaged and supported by their tertiary provider. 'Retention' means that students are staying in tertiary study and working toward completing a qualification. These students have a greater chance of completing their qualifications.
Overall performance
The following tables show the retention rate by level of qualification and by type of TEO between 2014 and 2016. The rates represent the proportion of Student Achievement Component (SAC) and funded students in a given year that complete a qualification, or re-enrol at the same organisation in the following year. These rates have been calculated using our previous educational performance indicator (EPI) methodologies.
