Bright Future Scheme

The Bright Future scholarships scheme supports people to conduct research. Bright Future includes two scholarships: Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarships and Enterprise Scholarships.

Enterprise Scholarships

Enterprise Scholarships have suffered from low uptake since it commenced in 2000. Despite greater promotion and increasing the frequency of the scholarships, interest has not increased sufficiently. Consequently, the government has discontinued Enterprise Scholarships.

This change will not affect any existing scholarships. Students who have already been awarded scholarships will continue to receive their entitlement.

For any questions in relation to Enterprise Scholarships, contact a Bright Future Administrator on 0800 832 463 or send an email to brightfuture@tec.govt.nz.

Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarships

Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarships recognise, support and reward excellent post-graduate New Zealand students. This scheme supports research at PhD level in all disciplines, at New Zealand tertiary education institutions or appropriate overseas institutions.

As part of the Budget announcement made on 28 May 2009, the Government announced that the Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarship scheme will be disestablished.

The Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarships round currently underway will be the last.

Scholarships will still be awarded for applications that were received in May 2009. Funding commitments to scholars in the current (and final) round will last for 3 years.

All other current Scholarships will be honoured.

MacDiarmid Young Scientists of the Year Awards

The annual MacDiarmid Young Scientists of the Year Awards showcases the outstanding work being done by New Zealand's up and coming scientists and technologists. Fellows and scholars of the Bright Future scheme are invited to submit a poster communicating their projects to a lay audience.
