Research Funds

The TEC Research Funds include the Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF), Centres of Research Excellence (CoREs), Building Research Capability in the Social Sciences (BRCSS), and Building Research Capability in Strategically Relevant Areas (BRCSRA).
  • Building Research Capability in the Social Sciences (BRCSS) is an initiative to build the capability of the tertiary education social science sector, as well as promote greater quality and relevance in social science research.
  • The Building Research Capability in Strategically Relevant Areas (BRCSRA) is designed to build research capability in subjects where PBRF results revealed significant nationwide gaps in areas of strategic relevance to New Zealand’s development.
  • The Centres of Research Excellence (CoREs) fund was established in 2001 to encourage the development of collaborative world-class research in New Zealand, by providing incentives for researchers in the tertiary education sector to conduct research that is excellent, contributes to New Zealand's future development, and incorporates knowledge-transfer activities.
  • The primary goal of the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) is to ensure that excellent research in the tertiary education sector is encouraged and rewarded. This entails assessing the research performance of tertiary education organisations (TEOs) and then funding them on the basis of their performance.
  • The Summer Scholarships initiative is designed to support research scholarships in the university sector over the 2009/10 summer trimester.
