Tertiary education strategy

The TEC is responsible for investment decisions that support government's strategic direction as outlined in the Tertiary Education Strategy 2007 – 2012 incorporating Statement of Tertiary Education Priorities 2008 – 2010.

New Zealand has an explicit, connected, future-focused tertiary education strategy that directly contributes to broad national, economic and social goals. The Tertiary Education Strategy 2007 – 2012 incorporating Statement of Tertiary Education Priorities 2008 – 2010 (TES/STEP) is a five-year blueprint for a collaborative and co-operative tertiary system that contributes to New Zealand's national goals and is closely connected to enterprise and local communities.

This TES/STEP sets out the government’s expectations and priorities for New Zealand’s tertiary education system. It will also guide the TEC’s investment decisions and act as a reference point for the government’s policy making and relationship with the sector.

The TES/STEP focuses on retaining breadth of provision while placing greater emphasis on raising the quality and relevance of that provision. It sets clear expectations and a limited set of priorities to focus investment and effort in the tertiary education sector in order to achieve national economic and social goals.
