Funding

The TEC is responsible for the allocation of all post compulsory education funding. Select the category that is of interest to you from below.

This page provides an overview for key changes to funding the tertiary education sector, following amendments to the Education Act in 2007.

Under the Education Act 1989, the Minister for Tertiary Education determines the design of the funding mechanisms the TEC must use to fund tertiary education organisations.

Under the Investment Plan process, tertiary education organisations (TEOs) seeking TEC funding are required to develop Investment Plans.

Modern Apprenticeships is a work-based education initiative that combines the best of the apprenticeship tradition with a modern twist.

Tertiary education organisations can electronically submit Targeted Training forms to the TEC.

The TEC Research Funds include the Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF), Centres of Research Excellence (CoREs), Building Research Capability in the Social Sciences (BRCSS), and Building Research Capability in Strategically Relevant Areas (BRCSRA).

Foundation and community funds include Academic Migrant Grant, ACE funding, Adult Literacy Educator Grants, Adult Literacy Projects, Embedded literacy and numeracy, Foundation Learning Pool, Gateway, Refugee Study Grants, Skill Enhancement.

The Bright Future scholarships scheme supports people to conduct research. Bright Future includes two scholarships: Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarships and Enterprise Scholarships.

The government funds Ako Aotearoa to promote and support effective teaching and learning across the entire tertiary sector in New Zealand.
