Successful completion of courses

This indicator shows the proportion of courses in a given year that are successfully completed. Courses are usually parts of qualifications and are sometimes referred to as ‘papers’.

Some providers, however, have a system where students are enrolled in a single year-long course which results in a qualification. In this instance, students who complete their course will also complete their qualification.

This indicator provides a short-term indication of how successful tertiary providers are in helping their students to successfully complete courses.

Passing courses is important in terms of gaining the knowledge and skills taught in that course. It is also important as it contributes towards finishing a qualification.

Successful course completion is important across all levels of study, with the exception of Masters and Doctorate degrees (Levels 9 – 10).

At that level, qualifications tend to be based around large single pieces of research-based work, rather than individual courses. That is why course completion rates are not published for those types of qualification.

Overall performance

The following tables show the successful course completion rate by level of qualification and provider type between 2011 and 2014.

The rates are shown for Student Achievement Component (SAC) and Youth Guarantee (YG) funded students.
