About institutes of technology and polytechnics

In 2015 the TEC has allocated around $600 million of funding to 18 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs). Information about the funding to ITPs in your region is included in the All Grants Provider Funding Spreadsheet which you can find at the bottom of the funding allocation web page.

Government expectations of ITPs

The Government expects ITPs to:

  • enable a wide range of students to complete industry relevant certificate, diploma and applied degree qualifications
  • enable local access to appropriate tertiary education
  • support students with low literacy, language and numeracy skills to improve these skills and progress to higher levels of learning
  • work with industry to ensure that vocational learning meets industry needs.

How enrolments influence performance

The nature of enrolments at a specific ITP will influence its performance. For example, part-time and extra-mural students often have work or family commitments and cannot devote as much time and energy to their studies.

TES priority groups

The Tertiary Education Strategy (TES) sets high expectations for TEO performance and prioritises an outcomes focus especially for industry, Māori and Pasifika learners and at risk young people.

The following tables show how those groups performed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 compared to all students at ITPs for Student Achievement Component (SAC) funding, and in 2013 and 2014 for Youth Guarantee (YG) funding.
