Recognised prior learning
Recognised prior learning (RPL), also known as 'approved prior learning', relates to previous study, or experience, relevant to study a student later wishes to undertake.
RPL enables students to proceed with their study without repeating those aspects of the qualification previously studied, or with which the learner is already familiar through past work or other experience.
Under Rule ENR017[1] there must be clear documentation to support an RPL decision. This documentation:
- confirms the learner has demonstrated the required knowledge or skill
- confirms consistency with the requirement that funded courses lead to the award of recognised qualifications.
RPL does not apply when the quality assurance body requires learners to repeat training periodically.
To avoid a student being funded more than once for the same study, or for study not undertaken, Rule ENR018[2] requires review of the RPL during the admissions process. RPL credits result in a reduced funding claim for the learner.
