Classification

Courses

For funding purposes TEOs are required, under SAC079, to classify their courses using the current 1-39 Classification Prescription. They are also required, for reporting purposes, to classify each course according to the New Zealand Standard Classification of Education (NZSCED).

Qualifications

These classifications determine the type of funding category applicable to the qualification. Funding categories are further defined by the level of study of a course’s home qualification using a numeric code (1-5).

Funding

The result is a qualification-level funding category identified by an alphanumeric code such as A4, which identifies the SAC funding rate for courses within that qualification. The funding category table identifies all funding categories and the alphanumeric code used to identify each category.

Note: Some health-related qualifications contain a clinical component that is recognised through the assigned funding category rate. Foreign student research-based postgraduate subsidies are for foreign students enrolled in wholly research-based courses.

Programme classification

Some qualifications, for example Medicine, are classified in programme classifications. We treat these qualifications in a different manner for funding purposes. There are also specific requirements for postgraduate education.
