The Modern Apprenticeships programme is a work-based education initiative which combines the strength of the apprenticeship tradition with the latest in workplace thinking.

Modern Apprenticeships make it easy for employers to recruit and train talented young people and provide them with an opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

MACs[1] are used to help both employers and apprentices to find each other, as well as give advice and support along the way.

There are two funding components for Modern Apprenticeships:

Modern Apprenticeship STM allocations are made for each calendar year as part of Investment Plans.

STM funding is calculated on the same basis as Industry Training Fund STMs.

Any ITO that receives funding must abide by a number of rules and conditions.

Access to Modern Apprenticeship funding will be considered in accordance with government policy (as directed by the Modern Apprenticeships Training Act 2000, the Minister’s determination under section 159L of the Education Act 1989) the Tertiary Education Strategy and in response to performance against the ITO's Investment Plan.
