Encouraging and Supporting Innovation funding will be disestablished from the end of 2010. All existing contracts will continue to be honoured.

The ESI[1] fund was established to encourage and support innovation by driving collaboration within the tertiary education sector and between the sector and industry.

The ESI fund is a fixed pool and was available on a contestable basis across all sub-sectors. ESI funding was available to ITPs, universities, wānangaITOs, PTEsTEO[2] representative bodies (peak bodies) and a consortia of TEOs[3]

Funding allocations are project based, with funding and activities agreed through a TEO’s Investment Plan.

We monitor the delivery of ESI projects through standard Investment Plan practices.

Any TEO, consortia or peak body that receives ESI funding must abide by a number of rules and conditions

Access to ESI funding is considered in accordance with government policy (as directed by the Minister’s determination under section 159L of the Education Act 1989), the Tertiary Education Strategy and in response to performance against the TEO’s Investment Plan.
