Ako Aotearoa, the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence, is funded to promote and support effective teaching and learning across the entire tertiary sector in New Zealand.

Ako Aotearoa is based in Wellington with hubs in Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch. It supports all TEOs[1] and groups who work with teachers and students, including existing networks and professional bodies, while remaining relevant and accessible to individual teachers.

Ako Aotearoa’s goals are to:

  • foster and support efforts to enhance teaching and learning
  • support research and inquiry into effective teaching and learning
  • identify and celebrate excellent teaching practice
  • act as a knowledge repository and resource to support effective teaching and learning
  • provide policy advice on teaching and learning within the tertiary education sector.

The Government’s Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards are hosted by Ako Aotearoa. These awards aim to recognise and encourage excellence in tertiary teaching while also providing an opportunity for teachers to further their careers and share their good practice with others.

Funding for the Awards and their administration is made via a Funding Agreement with Ako Aotearoa.

The consortium of organisations involved in Ako Aotearoa is funded via a contract with us and any TEO that receives funding must abide by a number of rules and conditions.
