Functions

We have independent statutory powers related to the planning and approval of Government funding for individual tertiary education organisations. Our operations are carried out within strategic and policy frameworks set by the Government under the Education Act 1989 (part 13A). Under the Crown Entities Act 2004, we are a Crown Agent and must give effect to government policy when directed by the Minister for Tertiary Education.

Our functions are stated in the Education Act 1989 (section 159F) and include:

  • operating the tertiary funding system
  • monitoring the performance of tertiary education organisations.

Under the Education Act 1989 (section 159KBA), our Chief Executive is required to monitor the financial and operational viability of tertiary education institutes, as well as oversee the Crown’s financial interests.

In addition, we must:

  • comply with any direction of the Minister
  • work closely with TEOs.
