Details on performance linked funding for tertiary education

3 August 2010

The Minister for Tertiary Education has announced details on how performance linked funding will be introduced to the tertiary education sector.

From 2012, up to 5% of Tertiary Education Organisations (TEOs) SAC funding will be at risk on an annual basis. Performance linked funding will start with measurement of performance in 2011, impacting on performance in 2012.

Performance for each TEO will be measured at grouped qualification levels - National Qualifications Framework levels 1 – 2, 3 – 4, 5 – 6, and 7 – 8. Performance in each grouped qualification level will be treated the same way for all parts of the sector – creating an even playing field.

Thresholds will be fixed for each grouped qualification level based on 2009 performance.  The threshold settings will be notified to the sector by the end of 2010.

The TEC will be meeting with sector peak body groups over the next few weeks to discuss full details of how performance linked funding will work.
