Media release: TEC to publish educational performance information

10 March 2010

The Chief Executive of the TEC, Dr Roy Sharp, has today confirmed that from July this year the TEC will be publishing information about the educational performance of universities, institutes of technology and polytechnics, wānanga and some private training establishments.

Future plans will also include publishing similar information for Industry Training Organisations and other tertiary education organisations.

This information will be published on the current TEC website – www.tec.govt.nz

Dr Sharp stated; “The information that is to be published will be based on the single data return that organisations already provide to the Ministry of Education three times a year.

“We are currently in the process of developing the way this information will be presented to make it easy to use and informative.”

Dr Sharp also noted that the information the TEC will publish is just part of the wider body of information that is currently available to prospective students.

“Universities, institutes of technology and polytechnics, wānanga and private training establishments, already publish a lot of information for prospective students."

“At the same time, Career Services, the Ministry of Education, and other education agencies have a wide variety of information available."

The information we will be publishing will add more to what is already available and should be used in conjunction with other sources.”

The educational information that is due to be published for each organisation will cover things like:

  • qualification completion
  • course completion
  • student progression to further study
  • student retention.

“Students seeking more information on individual courses or qualifications will still need to talk with the organisation themselves,” said Dr Sharp.
